Saint Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis was born in Assisi, Italy. He was the son of a rich merchant, and raised as a businessman, noble, and eventually a soldier for his hometown. One night, he had a dream where God told him that this was not his calling, and that he must return home. Despite the resistance he faced from his father and townsmen, Francis continued to follow the visions and voices sent to him by the holy spirit, to "rebuild the church", which he followed both literally and figuratively. Through abandonment of material possessions, Francis and his followers found the peace and joy sought after by everyone in all God's creation without wealth and property, and inspired many of the clergy to support his cause. Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals, the environment, and charity.
